Franco Pagetti was born in Varese in 1950. Shifting from chemistry to fashion pho-tography, he followed a personal path that ultimately led him to the world of repor-tage by the end of the 1990s.

He witnessed the birth of islamist terrorism as a global phenomenon, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He experienced the switch from analogic to digital and the change of information mechanisms. He’s always stayed true to his characteristic co-herence and rigor - which make him one of the most well-established and valued Italian photographers.

Since 2007 he’s been part of VII.

We’ve met him in his studio in Milan where he warmly welcomed us and accepted to play our game. He told us about the meaning of documenting war (both on a human and professional level), the ambiguous relationship with violence, and the sudden beauty of such places where war devastates people’s lives.

In this first part, Pagetti speaks about his latest travel in Syria and Veiled Aleppo, and the unique project that generated from it. He then moves on to the vital role played by ethics in photography and how it’s constantly put to test by events.

In this video: "Veiled Aleppo”, "Boundaries".

Who are you going to pass the baton to? And why?

To Peter van Agtmael, from Magnum, because I admire him greatly for his intelligence and culture.
